Alaskan Interior

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

USA | Sunday, November 6, 2011 | 5 photos

My photographs show a different side of Alaska. Everyone usually goes there to see bears and whales, but the interior landscape is just as fascinating. Everywhere I go, I look for something unusual to take, or a different angle, or something that happened in that place—these images do just that.

Ever since I was a small child I’ve been fascinated by photographs—how they freeze moments of time, from the photographers point of view. As I experience life through travel and serving those in need. I document people, places, and habitats wherever I go. Mainly for myself, but also for the groups I travel with. I love how images can tell a story, educate, and remind us of where we’ve been. Photographs bring the viewer into the moment of time whence the pictures were taken.

Going on an African Safari to see the big game animals up close and learning about South African people has always been a dream of mine. And to be able to photograph them alongside an award-winning photographer while observing and assisting a professional like Jason Edwards on assignment would be the ultimate experience. I have dreamt for a longtime of being a travel photographer and/or social documentary photographer. Now is the ideal time in my life to change careers, and this scholarship is the perfect foot-in-the-door to do that. I’m used to doing hard work, so long days and early and late hours don’t scare me a bit. My work ethic is to do whatever it takes to get the job done right. And, if after this experience I can publish my work and make a career educating others about social situations around the world, then that would be fantastic.
