Frenchman's Cap

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

For me the opportunity to gain the experience of being mentored by any photographer from NG would be surreal.

Growing up I dreamed of becoming the photographer that could show humanity's impact through all situations. Being a photographer makes you responsible for a unique power in that you get to represent and communicate to others the story of the individuals you capture.

Last year i had the opportunity to go hiking with my father and a small group of individuals though the Tasmanian wilderness to Frenchman's Cap. For myself and my dad it was one of the most epic and arduous adventures we have ever been on. I took a very limited array of camera equipment and did my best that i could do at the time given my knowledge then. Reflecting on the hike it was a wonderful experience and has really brought me closer to my Dad. From a photographic perspective it pushed me to under take my year long project which has helped my photography grow. With work and family I am unfortunately limited with travel at this point in time so i have spent this year focussing on build my lighting skills and portraiture work. The biggest thing I have found is that whilst gear and skills is important, when I can make that connection to the individual I get fantastic results.

Even if I am unsuccessful in gaining this scholarship, I intend to push my bounds again next year. Given the opportunity I would go back to Tasmania and shoot it again, taking the lessons i have learnt from my first trip.

I would love to be a fulltime photographer, my ultimate dream would be to hike in Peru to Machu Picchu, but to do so not by the conventional routes but take the time to see a culture that is so old and fascinates me.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all involved in offering this.

Thankyou
