Water monitor lizards are common throughout Borneo, especially in riverside areas. Not quite as large as their Komodo cousins , they often reach 1.5 meters in length and 25kg in weight. This large water monitor was found foraging along the riverbank for fish, frogs, rodents and snakes.

Local people are abandoning their traditional way of life to work in the palm oil plantations living in purpose built compounds on the land. These villagers are supplementing their meagre wages fishing for prawns in the early morning mist.

Egrets are very common, but still enchanting in their elegance. They are most active at sunset. They are often found fishing over rivers. This egret took flight as our canoe approached, giving me the possibility of capturing its elegant takeoff.
