A day in the life The world is a book; those who do no travel only read one page (St Augustine of Ippona)

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Friday, October 15, 2010 | 4 photos

I've always had a passion for photography but never had the time nor the means to study it. I worked as a butcher for many years; first in Australia, then in England. I always pursued my passion as a hobby, dedicating my free time to it. I am entirely self-taught; I learnt to shoot reading photography books and magazines, or exchanging tips with friends.
Two years ago I decided I wanted to change my life; travel and photography are my passions, so I set off to take pictures of the world. I spent 14 months travelling around the world; these pictures were taken during my time in India. I was captivated by the mood pervading Udaipur during the premonsoon season; although the lake was dry, townspeople were able to turn it into a resource nevertheless. Shepherds in their red saggy turbans led their flocks to graze on the soft grass carpeting the lake bed, and young men played cricket with the stunning backdrop of Udaipur's cityline.
I would like to win the scholarship in order to be able to spend time with a professional photographer and learn on the field. I have never taken a photography course, so I am aware my technique may need some refining. Reading books and magazines helped me to understand the theory of photography, and 14 months travelling allowed me to have plenty of practice opportunities. I now need the advice of an expert to complete my learning process, somebody that can help me put what I know into practice, whilst be alonsgside me while I do it. Having this 'field learning' experience would allow me also to gain the confidence to take the great leap, and pursue a career in travel photography.
