Egrets are very common, but still enchanting in their elegance. They are most active at sunset. They are often found fishing over rivers. This egret took flight as our canoe approached, giving me the possibility of capturing its elegant takeoff.

Water monitor lizards are common throughout Borneo, especially in riverside areas. Not quite as large as their Komodo cousins , they often reach 1.5 meters in length and 25kg in weight. This large water monitor was found foraging along the riverbank for fish, frogs, rodents and snakes.

Proboscis monkeys are among the most critically endangered primate species in the world, suffering dramatically from the loss of habitat. Proboscis monkeys are sociable and playful, living in large groups of several families. Their shrills fill the air around the riverbanks in the Sungai Kinabatangan, especially in the afternoon. They love leaping from tree to tree; despite their portly appearance they are extremely agile.
