My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

There is exactly one reason why I should be chosen for the scholarship: Every time I look through my camera and press that shutter I feel happy. Nothing brings me joy like capturing the world around me with my camera; it connects me to the beauty, the hardship and the raw life of the people I am lucky enough to photograph.
During the last six years of my studies as a geography and English major, I have been travelling to several countries, always with the desire to scratch under the cultural surface with my camera and to reveal the real life that people are living. My travels taught me to understand other cultures and places in the way they are, allowing me intimate, respectful contact with locals.
I love being able to help my society understand the different faces of the world. I have made public slideshows in my hometown and it has become more and more apparent to me that I would be a great travel photographer. Due to my other studies, however, I am self-taught. I have come a long way, but as I have never been taught in photo school it is difficult to make the leap into photojournalism. This, however, is my greatest wish. I would much appreciate having Jason mentor me in Oman.
