Six months ago I applied for the Oman scholarship. I’m pasting part of that essay here, not because I’m being lazy, but because my motives and passion for photography have not changed. My skills have improved and this new set of pictures will attest to my words…
In today’s society, most of our information comes from visual mediums. For the issues that don’t affect us directly, all we know is what we see. Therefore, it is of great importance to be able to convey a powerful and accurate story through images.
No visual form is better than the other, but travel photography, I believe, has one of the biggest responsibilities. It’s one of the only mediums capable of making us connect with stories from afar. It has the power to tell an alternate version to the one brought by the mainstream media. It can help destroy stereotypes and make us care about this world.
By becoming a travel photographer, I would work towards portraying an important message. I would like to give my art a social cause. I’d like to develop my skills to the point where I can teach and help others use photography in conjunction with a wide range of media, to tell the story of their culture, history and struggles.
