My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

My name is Matt Law, I’m a 26-year-old third-year journalism student in Vancouver, Canada.

Photography has always been a part of my life in some form. I grew up working in my dad’s makeshift darkroom and have always admired the work of great photojournalists. I am passionate about nature, people and experiencing as much of the world as possible. While I have only been serious about a career in photojournalism for the past three years I have been dedicating my entire life to achieving this goal. My school, internships and personal time have been spent learning the craft.

Through studying journalism and photography I have realized that a photograph has the power to change how someone views the world. Pictures can bring attention to important issues, promote understanding and let someone experience another place and culture. They can open someone’s eyes and change government policy. If I can learn to take photos that make a difference in the world I will have achieved something that means more to me than any of my other accomplishments. This is what drives me to take better shots. My dream is to one day be a photojournalist and inspire people through my work.

This internship would be an amazing opportunity to be mentored by someone who can teach how to make a difference with photography.

I have not had the opportunity to travel to many exotic places but I have found a lot of interesting stories near my home. The photos here are from a hard-rock gold mining camp in British Columbia, Canada. The town, which was once home to thousands of people, now has a population of just 60. The struggling mine is the only hope for the town’s survival.
