My Scholarship entry - Slow in New York

We come to know a new place by diminishing degrees of scale. First are the landmarks, then the streets and shops in between, and finally we start to notice the minute details that color in our world. I think some of the most revealing aspects of a new place lie within its details, yet these details are often harder to access if you haven’t spent enough time in a new place.
For me, photography thus means capturing and sharing those details. I hope that by viewing my photographs, people can experience the pulse of life of a new place like an actual participant - not just the landmarks and monuments like a casual tourist. Photography means capturing those stories that otherwise would not have been told.
I am currently studying Political Science as an undergraduate at New York University. I hope to become involved in international development work or journalism and photojournalism after graduating. I have had no formal training in photography, and the Travel Photography Scholarship would be a fantastic opportunity for me to learn from an expert and get real exposure in the field. Thank you for your consideration!
