    Walking the Barkhor Kora is like stepping back in time ~ pilgrims from all over Tibet are bundled up, grimy, with babies strapped to their backs ~ all spinning prayer wheels and murmuring mantras. Views[493] Ah, my favourite shop ~ The Ancient Things Store! Views[590] Devout pilgrims out front of the Jokhang, polishing the paving stones with their prostrations. Views[475] Walking the Barkhor kora ~ a place full of interesting faces and characters. Views[451] On our first day out ~ just literally rode our horses right by this woman, taking a rest at the side of the trail. So beautiful. Views[412]
     
    The Chinese memorial to the 'liberation' of Tibet, more than 50 years ago. Conveniently located directly opposite the Potala ~ I suppose we can be grateful theres no statue of Mao ~ yet. Views[489] ME out front of the Potala. Views[450] Looking down on the street, as we left the restaurant, we saw all these amazing people hanging out, playing music ~ just enjoying the day. I still love seeing all those babies strapped to their mothers backs. Views[477] In one of the alleyways behind the Jokhang. I'm not really sure what was going on here ~ some sort of game, where you have to shoot out the balloon to win a prize, I think. I just thought that the little guy with the gun was interesting.     A sign at the internet cafe in Lhasa ~ lest you forget you are in a police state, within China. Views[573] Just to show the scale of this massive building. Views[467] This woman was more than happy to have her picture taken....she just wanted to SEE it afterwards, is all. Views[484] Looking out over Sera Monastary....all whitewashed walls and red trim. Views[502] This huge skinny building is used at festival times to hang giant 'thankas' ~ tapestries illustrated with a buddhist theme. Views[572]
     
    At Sera Monastary ~ it was a gorgeous day, and I fell far behind everyone else as I stopped to take pictures of everything. Views[1572] Prayer flags EVERYWHERE at the Drepung Monastary outside of Lhasa. Views[519] Carl shows some tibetan people his guidebook ~ maybe the most they will see of tibet, outside of lhasa. Views[531] Sitting with a tibetan girl ~ I had sat down to have my photo taken with the red door, and she ran over to join me. A much better photo than I'd had in mind...! Views[537] The view from the airport waiting room ~ mountains surrounding the tiny airport, and an empty spot where the plane should be. Views[456]
     
    Just starting out on the kora around Sera ~ a very typical scene. Chontelle trekking along, a woman begging for a handout, and a gorgeous blue sky with white clouds. Views[556] At Sera Monastary. Views[578] Painted deities adorn a rock at Sera Monastary Views[539] An old woman at Sera Monastary. Views[495] Hanging out at Sera Monastary....a very cool place, with crimson robed monks wandering around, whitewashed walls, and a general sense of peacefulness. Views[587]
     
    Two monks, having just come out of some sort of prayer session, make their way between buildings within Sera Monastary. Views[447] Sitting in a doorway at Sera Monastary....resting after a long, long walk uphill. Views[426] At Sera Monastary; the first monk to exit the chapel ~ soon followed by a steady stream of crimson robes. Views[707] Yup, I'm 7. Had to try it out ~ this is the gate to the courtyard of the Yak Hotel, where we were staying. Views[452] Yummy flower tea ~ with masala tea in the background. Views[471]
     
    Chontelle and I with our 'flower' tea ~ our first morning in Lhasa. The stuff is gorgeous ~ literally flowers, and rock sugar, with hot water poured overtop. A little too sweet, though.     Oops. forgot to turn this one around. Anyways, its Andrea up on the Wall. Views[348] At the Great Wall, just a short hike from the Shack. I am SO glad Andrea took me up here ~ you are literally overcome with a sort of giddy joy at being up there. Not to mention it was a perfect day ~ crisp air, a bit of snow on the ground, and not another Westerner around. Views[419] The Great Wall. Views[350] Again, at the Great Wall. It was cold enough to warrant the hat, but sunny enough to warrant the sunglasses ~ perfect. Views[385] Andrea and I up on the Wall ~ great big giddy smiles on our faces. The only other people we saw up there were some chinese who were camping ~ all kitted out in bright Columbia gear, their tents right up beside the Wall. What a place to wake up in the morning.     Again, up there. I must have taken 7million pictures. Views[341] Me in the teashop! With my itty-bitty wee teacup and the stacks of tea I bought in front of me.     Bundled up for dinner at the Shack ~ we ordered an hour before we ate, and had a great meal prepared for us ~ but it was bitter cold. Good thing that Jade keeps the Shack supplied with old Chinese army coats...which are super warm. Views[677] Skott lighting the coal stove, and Andrea setting up the kang.....at the Shack.     Me at CKS Intl. Airport, very bored. I was there from about 12midnight until my flight to Singapore, about 7am. Ha ha, and also ~ you can see up my nose! (but I still like this pic....)
