Tourism has encouraged the fascination of the Sami people with many tours including husky/dog sledding. Many of the tours will take you out into the snowy wilderness where you cannot see anything but snow and trees.

Swedish Sami people’s first language is not Swedish so having a Sami person speak to you in English show’s how tourist interest is growing and how the Sami people are adapting and willing to welcome foreigners into their way of life. The name Lapland comes from the word Lap, which is a term that has been used for Sami people, but it is seen as a derogative word so it’s best to refer to them as Sami.

In northern Swedish Lapland in the winter it is dark almost the whole time except for a glimpse of dusky light with some areas experiencing snowfall for eight months of the year with temperatures dropping down to -40 degrees Celsius.
