    I took this shot following Ishmael’s lament. The old road has become seldom used as more people use the new bridge and highway to reduce travel time. He worries about how it is affecting the local honey-making industry and how it lessens the opportunity for Libyans to appreciate the wealth of stories associated with the land and experience the unique scenery along this older route. by: lcabahug Views[175] Caves dot the cliffs in several sections of the old road we took. Ramadan and Ishmael were telling me that bigger caves served as hiding posts for Libyan freedom fighters during the Italian occupation. The rugged terrain around these parts also served as an ambush zone whenever the Italian army pass the trail. by: lcabahug Views[173] It was dark and we were on our way to find a place to spend the night but Ishmael, our driver insisted that we check out another site. He wanted to show us evidence of Christianity in Libya. This building is what was once a Christian chapel built by the Italians when they occupied Libya. by: lcabahug Views[116] Small-scale operations were common along the road as the eastern region well-known for the best honey in Libya. We were told that operators end up employing expatriates from central Africa (who cross the Saharan border into Libya) to man their operations because of the cheap labour. by: lcabahug Views[179] I had the opportunity to visit Libya and drive through the eastern region with my good friend Ramadan back in October 2008. Libya’s history and landscape is rich along the route we took on our way to Al Bayda, a small country located near the Al Jabal Al Akhdar Mountains or Green Mountains. We drove into an old, less used and winding road into the mountains and away from the newly constructed highway.
