Looking, You Like, Which Country?

It's always really fun to get familiar with the bargaining rituals in a new country. Initially, it can be a bit overwhelming, but once you do a few "practice" bargains, it becomes rather entertaining. One aspect that is especially humorous, is how the touts try to get your attention so you'll check out their stuff. We've heard numerous openers, but the one that seems most popular in both India and Nepal is, "which country?" (translation: what country are you from sir/madame) They're obviously pretending that they are really interested in where you're from, but we know better. It's also entertaining to decipher the bits and pieces of English that the touts use to get your attention. "Looking" is a Nepali favorite, which translates to: "would you like to take a look at the crap Im trying to sell?" When you put the bits and pieces together, it gets really good, and has a bit of rhythm to it: "Looking? You Like? Which Country? You Like?" Of course we've mastered the art of not letting them know we're not interested in their crap, in a nice way of course. We've taken a start at a list of tout openers that we'll keep a running, live list of, and add to as we continue our travels: Opener Country Hey Boss India Looking? Nepal You Like? Nepal Which Country? India/Nepal What can I do to sell you something? Nepal Yes?! India Want some grass? Nepal (at the World Peace Pagoda from a Sadhu) Shhh..... means, want some Hashish Nepal (we both keep getting propositioned, and I'm not even wearing a doo rag)
