The Elusive Poison Dart Frog

PANAMA | Wednesday, 24 October 2007 | Views [2063]

Isla Bastiamentos has a well known beach - Red Frog Beach, that is famous for those little creatures called Poison Dart Frogs.  A large development near the beach, Red Frog Resort, is actually threatening the habitat of these slippery little red creatures.  We enjoyed a scorching hot day at Red Frog Beach and played for hours in the very warm, turquoise waters.  We looked all over for the frogs and because it's been so dry today, we think they're all hiding away.  We did find a couple frogs hidden in big green leaves, in the hands of small local children.  We finally broke down and paid the 25 cents to a little kid to capture a picture of one.

Isla Bastiamentos is not only known for the poisonous frogs, but also the biting sand fleas.  You can't see them anywhere, and in fact, as we're laying on the beach we don't even realize we've been bitten.... of course until later this evening, after our shower, our bodies break out in itchy welts.  We've been eaten alive by invisible sand fleas and it feels and looks like we have chicken pox.
