Berlin Bar is a rather fun German-themed bar; the best part would be deciding if you wanted to be in opulent West Berlin or barbed-wire East Berlin. West Berlin has plush sofas, gilded mirrors, and a feeling of splendor. East Berlin, however, is full of camouflage netting, ammo box and converted bath tub tables with the Great Dictator projected onto the walls.
This is one of my favorite themed bars in Melbourne (and probably one of my favorite bars in general). It’s located in a laneway called Corrs Lane in the Chinatown sector of Melbourne’s CBD (central business district) right next to Eurotrash. You go up some stairs, see a photo of Charlie Chaplin in a Hitler-mustache (clearly you’re in the right place), keep going up more stairs and ring a doorbell to be let in. A bartender will let you in, let you decide where you want to sit (depending on how busy it is, of course), and hand you a German passport menu for you to make your selection off of.
There is a variety of assortment of international beers, wines, and cocktails to choose from. I’m always a bit of a cocktail girl so I’ve brazenly made my way through a good portion of their cocktails on several occasions. My favorite of the bunch is called Twentieth Century Boy which was a lovely chocolate orange mix. I also liked the Love Parade which was super girly and full of strawberries though it was too sweet to drink by my lonesome so I shared. I wish I could tell you what was in the drinks but I can’t seem to access their website at the moment. Stand assured that it is made with high quality ingredients and is presented quite prettily – as all their drinks are.
With that said, be prepared to pay a generous sum of money for what you get. Most cocktails are in the AU$18 range and beer probably isn’t that much cheaper. This is not a weekly-visit kind of place but a great one to celebrate an event with a small group of people. And if it’s the weekend, well, they DO get rather busy so take that into consideration when making plans.
Overall a rather fun themed bar that I seem to come back to quite often when I’m feeling a bit flush with cash and have a good reason (or excuse) to head out to the city for some drinks.
And happy drinking to you, too!
