Day 62 - Caye Caulker

BELIZE | Wednesday, 30 July 2014 | Views [257]

Left Hopkins before 7am and had pretty smooth bus connections through to Belize City via Dangriga. I was sad to leave my fabulous friends from the night before but had to get to the Caye ready to enrol for my dive course starting Tuesday.

Met a lovely couple on my bus - Dutch girl & Danish guy, Elishka & Marc who became my travel buddies for the mission to Caye Caulker.

We arrived in the island around 1pm in the end & after settling at Yuma's place - a fantastic hostel by the jetty - I set out to explore the island.

I walked around the whole island - not hard given it's only 8.2kms long! Headed to the south caye first & found myself in mangrove mosquito hell for a good half hour. It was 100% humidity, about 36 degrees & no wind, post rain. Worst time to pick for that walk really! But I made it - probably with around 15 new bites :(

After my exploration tour I made it back to the main stretch, collected my dive pack & had a delicious mango & coconut smoothie by the split.

Met my transit buddies for dinner at this place on the back part of the island called Whishwilly's. The guy who runs this outdoor BBQ place is an absurd cracker, massive dude with huge dreads & an even bigger personality. We ate bbq'd lionfish which was amazing & then he have us some free lobster! Winning!

Post dinner we feasted on peanut butter & coconut icecream before hitting the island's infamous reggae bar. It's an awesome set up with swings as chairs & bar stools. Freaking fantastic.

We made friends with a local called Steve & then had a midnight celebration to bring in Marc's birthday with quite tasty chocolate cake shots washed down with a bit of rum punch!

I like everything about Caye Caulker, even if it is killing my budget!
