DAY 88. Keeping Things Interesting

NEW ZEALAND | Sunday, 22 January 2017 | Views [263]

We slept in, packed up camp, had breakfast and drove out of Fox Glacier. We stopped near the Franz Josef Glacier then continued on to Hokitika and checked out the beach and then went to buy groceries. We made lunch and left the little town. The coast was gorgeous to drive along as we went through Greymouth and continued going north up the west side of the island. We stopped just before Punakaiki at the pancake and blowhole beach. There were a lot of other tourists around and we walked down the pathway until we came to a place up above the ocean. There were rock formations all over and they were like big stacks of pancakes in all shapes and sizes. It was a really cool area! There was also a big blow hole and it was cool to watch the massive waves crash up on the rock cliffs.

We walked back to our car and I suddenly gasped because I saw that our poor Helga had a flat tire. I pointed and Michealla saw it too. All we could do was laugh and try to fix it. As we were moving our stuff out of the back so we could get to the spare tire, the big flat of eggs fell to the ground with not a single survivor. Just as we were getting the car jack out of its compartment, two guys that were parked nearby came and asked if we needed help. Of course we did and we were so grateful. They changed our tire very quickly and all the sudden, Helga was looking better. We attempted to pay them or to go buy them a few beers but they declined. We wanted to keep heading north to Westport but we knew that was too far of a drive on the spare tire. So we headed back to Greymouth, slowly.

We checked into a holiday park and got one of the rooms instead of a tent site. We changed and got ready then headed for Monteith's, one of New Zealand's oldest breweries which started back in 1868. The place was super cool and the beer was delicious. Then we went to Speight's brewery then crossed the street by the river and saw a bright pink sunset. We headed back to the park and went to bed.
