March is windy in Thailand and therefore designated to that most romantic of sports, kite flying.
Its very much my cup of tea. I stay on the ground whilst the kite endures, "any sudden turbulence." (pilot quote) In fact you could liken kite flying to a relationship. Theres an initial lift-off and sense of uplift, there's tugging and jolting, soaring and maybe some aerobatics. There's twisting, turning and vertical manouveres. Whilst some kites are clearly more racy and aerodynamic than others they all end up crashing to the ground in a pile.
Cynicism aside, I took to the large park not far from Khosan Road to watch kite battling at night.
There is a festival atmosphere as hordes of vendors sell their wares to families seated on mats whilst their kids and some very serious adults fly their amazing craft.
At any one point you may see 100 kites aloft. Its colourful, environmentally friendly, healthy and as long as you do it alone - no one gets hurt!
