The strangest dessert I have ever ordered

The strangest dessert I have ever ordered

This is the national dessert and I am always up for trying new puds so I ordered it today at our hotel in Naga. How bad could it be? Would it rival some of the random desserts I have had in Japan? Or those disappointing mung bean ones I ended up with in Ho Chi Minh City? I ordered something once in Osaka that looked like mint choc-chip and vanilla ice-cream with chocolate sauce in the picture. It ended up being mung beans, green tea icecream topped with tofu and black sesame sauce.

Anyway, today I found out that halo-halo may look like a knickerbocker glory, but has some really random ingredients. I only recognised 2 of them (glace cherries and snow – yes, snow) so I just looked it up on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo-halo All sorts of things that have no rbusiness being in a dessert, like sweet kidney beans and mung beans, but (apart from the snow which I scraped off the top) tasted pretty good. I admit I did leave some of the green beans at the bottom.

What a wonderful escape--there is so much to see in the Philippines--but do be careful of Abu Sayef...
