We travelled by jeepney today which was
quite fun. It was pouring with rain in Naga and it was quite snug
inside the jeep. Fortunately, the ceiling and walls are padded (there
is a lot of jigging around on the potholed roads). The driver seems
to stop wherever you want and people get on and off along the way. We
shared our journey with teenage schoolgirls, a mum who had just
picked up her two small children form school, and lots of other
individuals going shopping or back to work. The drivers tend to be
20 something cool looking lads with baseball caps and t-shirts with
cut off sleeves. On our second trip we sat near the driver and
people would pass us up the fare (7 pesos) to pass to him. He
managed to fish for change, watch the road and negotiate the giant
gear stick with no problem at all. The radio was on and he cranked up
the volume when Backstreet Boys came on and started singing along.
We (and all the other passengers) joined in “I don't care who you
are, where you're from.....” Quite a laugh.
