USA Part 2

USA | Saturday, 12 April 2008 | Views [764]

We got up and it had snowed about 10 inches and our hire car was COVERED in snow!
We went into have breakfast and there was a guy shovelling snow out the back. So Candice decided to ask him if we could have a go at shovelling snow. He said: "Hell yeah, I'll just go get some more shovels". He though all his christmas's had come at once cause we enjoyed it that much we did most of the work!

We then asked around for the weather conditions to see if it was wise to drive to Mt Rushmore as there was snow on the roads and they are really slippery. The lady at our $40 a night including breakfast motel, told us to wait till it warmed up. So to pass the time we went for a walk though the town and it looks like a 1900's old gun slickin town.
The sun came out so we decided to try our luck on the snowy roads. Luckily the plough man had been and put some grit down for us so we were good to go.

We got to Mt Rushmore and the weather had cleared up just enough for us to see all the faces. However they had snow on there heads and it was melting down their faces. So it was wet on some bits of their face and not on others. Although it was a pretty cool site. Not as big as what we had imagined but pretty bloody big!
We had just finished walking around the path and as we did it started snowing REALLY heavy. Like nothing we had even seen before. We met a lady coming up the stairs who asked us if she would be able to see the faces in the snow and we said no. She told us that it was her third day trying to see them. So we were really lucky to see them in the hour we were there.

We then headed onto Crazy Horse memorial, which is a HUGE carving of this Indian chief riding his horse and pointing to where his dead lye. It isn´t finished yet and it won´t be for a LONG time yet as it isn´t government funded out of moral pride. The sculptor died before he could finish it and he asked his family to carry on with his work. Therefore they are funding it all themselves, even though the government has approached them many times to help, but they still refuse which is incredible. So all the money comes from admission and sponsorship.
