Julie and Craig's sailing trip

La Rochelle to Hendaye

FRANCE | Monday, 9 August 2010 | Views [465]

Departed La Rochelle 8th August 0615 bound for Hendaye approx 36 hours away.  This was our first sail on our own with only Julie and I on board.  Grey and swelly with just a light breeze as we headed out but cleared up to be quite a sunny day and a great sail with the wind behind us all the way once we cleared an island off La Rochelle and headed south towards Hendaye.  Decided to motor overnight due to our inexperience and sailed again from sun up, arriving at Hendaye around 3.00pm.  Quite a surprise.  A beautiful beachside resort town right on the border of Spain. The river is the border with Hendaye on the French side and Fuenterrabia in Spain on the other side of the river.  Small mountain backdrop to the picturesque bay.  Plenty of good surf within 30 minutes either side so we will likely stay for a couple of weeks.  Currently in the marina but will move out and anchor in the bay in couple of days.
