Thursday 16th June11 - Ilha Grande

BRAZIL | Thursday, 16 June 2011 | Views [344]

The misty mountains of Ilha Grande grow bigger and bigger as we get closer on our fishermensboat, they call ferry here. We even have the discussion if you can call it a ship. Yes, I~m learning the difference between the two from my sailerman hubby.

Ilha Grande is of jaw dropping beauty.Arriving on a little pier right in front of the main town, if the three streets even deserve tha name, we walk along the beach to our new hostel. We~re getting a hang of this South-America travelling, so we dicided to give the hostel we want to stay in a call before we arrive and tell them we~re looking to pay 60 instead of the asked 80 for a double room. It works as well, James can be proud of us.

As we bath true a little river with our backpacks, we feel like we~re really having an adventure. As we are shown our room, I jump a hole i the air, as a good dutch expression puts it, of happines. As we have the capitains room, which we suspect is actually been build by a captain having his house here back in the days. We even have our own balcony with stagering view on the harbour and sunset. It truelly looks like paradise.

The funny thing is that this island used to be occupied by 5 prisons, from which the last one was only put out of practice in 1995. Now it~s an nature reserve, where you can go for long walks true the rainforest, kayack, snorkel, dive and surf. We are planning on doing someting like that tomoror, but we have to see how Grom is feeling then. He lies under a blanket, with his thermo shirt with long sleeves and a scarf in bed. Claming it~s cold beeing 20 C. As I have only seen him wear that shirt going to Aberdeen with -15C, I think he got a bit of a cold. So we should really chill a bit. I guess not a penalty here.
