Yuni’s community united to celebrate one of the larger festivals ‘Bon-dori’ in front of the town train station. With synchronised shouts the men lift the shrine and tap the wood to rest their weary shoulders.

At a Buddhist temple ceremony, the men stand straight and tall awaiting the start of the candle service, their faces full of dignity and calm. Despite the difference in details, the evening still reminds me of an Easter vigil from back home.

On weekends, I take pottery lessons with Mr Yoshida at the Yuni community centre. He has amazingly deft yet knobbly fingers that have been moulding clay for 20years. He’s 89 years old, smokes and rides an old 70’s motorbike. He's cool.
