    At the smallest of my primary schools, there are 11kids. “Y” is performing on the unicycle at the school festival. He is small for his age and has a speech impediment but is very determined and gives everything his best. by: escape Views[303] On weekends, I take pottery lessons with Mr Yoshida at the Yuni community centre. He has amazingly deft yet knobbly fingers that have been moulding clay for 20years. He’s 89 years old, smokes and rides an old 70’s motorbike. He's cool. by: escape Views[364] Yuni’s community united to celebrate one of the larger festivals ‘Bon-dori’ in front of the town train station. With synchronised shouts the men lift the shrine and tap the wood to rest their weary shoulders. by: escape Views[267] At a Buddhist temple ceremony, the men stand straight and tall awaiting the start of the candle service, their faces full of dignity and calm. Despite the difference in details, the evening still reminds me of an Easter vigil from back home. by: escape Views[243] Yuni’s population is shrinking and aging as young adults move away to make their lives in the cities. This year’s autumn festival was almost deserted, but still managed to attract a few loyal enthusiasts to the game and food stalls. by: escape Views[305]
