My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, October 17, 2010 | 5 photos

I recently packed my big backpack with a DSLR, oodles of 35mm film and an old pentax k1000, plus a few other necessities, and travelled to Ghana for 4 months of volunteer teaching and journalism work.

The colour, the fervent activity, the joy and passion of Ghana is a photographers dream. I delighted in spending day after day wandering the streets with my camera, meeting the faces and experiencing the places of this peaceful and proud country. I have selected five images that reflect on the social, economic and religious character of Ghanaian society.

I am in my final year of journalism studies at the University of South Australia- I'm very inquisitive and have an insatiable desire to explore and learn. I bought my first DSLR 1.5 years ago and it has been attached to my hand ever since. I quickly discovered photography was perfect for me, satisfying my love of art and storytelling, and desire to be out and about, meeting new people and exploring the abundance of visual delights this world has to offer.

My time in Ghana made me realise documentary photography is my passion and future. Realising this, on return I altered my final year study plan to include photography subjects, and have spent this year beginning to develop my photography skills. Going to Bhutan would be the perfect way to bridge the completion of my journalism degree and my next step of furthering my photography skills.

I have dreamed of travelling to Bhutan ever since I read about it in high school and learned of its 'Gross National Happiness'. So far, most of my photography focus is on people, and I would love the chance to extend my eye and skills into wildlife photography. The chance to work with Jason Edwards would be...I can't even think of a word that explains how amazing this would be!
