The Bhoti Tribe, in this Trans Himalayan region, believes the spirit of their deceased Guru enters the body of their village priest and solves queries and complaints of the village gathering, on the occasion of Namkan. The Shaman here entranced by faith, stands with sacred scarves around his head and prayer flags offered, jhandis, at his hand, with trident belief.

Heaps of straws dot the village of Tabo announcing the advent of the village treshing festival, Namkan. Amidst apple trees and sparse rain in the desert mountain region of Spiti Valley, mud houses coexist with few cemented structures. After harvesting, between winnowing and storing the grains for winters, Namkan forms an important transitional point in the village’s lives.

Lilting to the narrative of local deities and folklore, hymns are sung as cold mountain air blends with the melody. After that, the women brief the men, before the latter proceed to Lapse, where prayer flags are tied.
