The agricultural worker. As soon as the day has barely started to dawn at five in the morning, people begin to flock onto a square on the outskirts of Bhubaneshwar, carrying wicker baskets full of work tools on their heads. The square is home to an unusual market, with no stalls or goods. Here, people sell their labor to work in the fields. Once a customer arrives, they pick up their simple tools and leave to work the entire day under the hot Indian sun.

The fishermen.
India attracts many tourists as a place where one can get away from the daily hustle and bustle to lead a relaxed and measured life. But most Indians do not have this opportunity, working hard every day earning their tucker. One of the most common occupations among India’s lower castes is fishing. Most fishing villages are located right on the coast, where inhabitants live in thatched huts and park their boats side by side nearby. Children are actively involved in helping the adults’ daily work. In the photo: two children carrying a fishing net, fishing village on the shore of the Bay of Bengal, Konark, Orissa.

The slaughterer.
Not all Hindus are vegetarians, and the most common source of meat in India is chicken. In the meat markets, the live birds are slaughtered after being sold by weight. Since the vast majority of workers in these markets are Muslim, they follow the requirements of their religion and make the meat Halal by cutting the chicken’s throat and leaving it to exsanguinate (bleed to death) in an adjacent barrel. Although this is often described as the most humane form of slaughter, causing a rapid loss of blood pressure in the brain and an immediate loss of consciousness, each bird goes through vigorous convulsions in the barrel for about two minutes following the fatal cut. This is probably just reflexive action of the spinal cord. In the photo: this slaughterer, a master of his craft, is very familiar with his fatal knife. Market place of Bhubaneswar, Orissa.
