My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Uganda | Friday, July 5, 2013 | 5 photos

Until I was 16, I had used cameras but had never considered one a means of expression. I remember precisely the moment I took an interest in photography was on a family trip to India when my grandfather looked at a photo I took of the festival of Holi and said he wished people could see the colours of India the way they had been portrayed in that one shot. Having been born and brought up in Kenya, being of Indian ethnicity and currently living in the UK, I have always taken cultural awareness for granted. It was in that moment that I realised not everyone has had the privilege to travel and interact with so many local cultures. In the years following, I started using my camera to capture moments which defined communities through my eyes. My stereotypically Asian family didn't let me go to university to study photography and it has always remained a lingering dream to learn. On top of spending a few days exclusively taking photos, it would be an additional privilege to learn from Jason, who knows his way around a camera and composition. I hope to use this opportunity as a needed stepping stone of experience and education to fuel a future career for me.
