    This was a couple from the local village who went to collect firewood in the forest surrounding the falls so as to use it to cook and heat/light their huts at night. Everyone in the village does this at least once a week, because there is no electricity available to their village. by: dishaparekh Views[461] As we continue, we met Christopher, who tells us that he often sits on the side of the mud track that lead to the hotels and waits for tourists to 'give him money or a packet of biscuits'. Sometimes, he collects enough to fill his metal pot, which he then goes and shares with his 2 siblings. by: dishaparekh Views[329] On our drive in a 4-wheel-drive Pajero from the falls to our hotel, we are met with 4 young children of the local community walking to their village after having collected water from the falls for their domestic use. by: dishaparekh Views[351] Meet Peter, our tour guide. Peter is an 11 year old boy, who spends his days taking the tourists on a hike from the top of the falls to the bottom. This is their 7 member family's only source of income. In this photo, Peter washes a cap that one of the American tourists dropped on their hike to keep for himself because he tells us that other than the clothes he has on his back, he has 2 other pairs. by: dishaparekh Views[359] This is Sipi Falls, located on the foothills of Mt. Elgon in Western Uganda. Until the recent past, it has remained a pristine, untouched, green paradise. For the last few years, it has become an increasingly popular tourist destination for the expatriate community in Uganda, giving rise to various hotels, tours and tourist activities such as abseiling. As a tourist like me sat in a double-bed room, with a hot shower and a television, it was heartbreaking to see the state of the local community who lived in a village between our hotel and the falls. by: dishaparekh Views[520]
