Navimag - puerto montt to puerto natales

AUSTRALIA | Friday, 3 October 2008 | Views [1020]

Hola All,

We are in puerto natales about 1500km south of purto montt after spending 4 days travelling on the ship puerto eden. Staying at erratic rock hostel.

Day 1. Ship leaves at 4pm and boards at 230pm. I was a bit grumpy as we had traded in our AA cabin for an economy when we changed tickets at the last moment. Turned out to be fine as we had our cabin 310, a 4 bed room, to ourselves and we were down next to the top cargo deck. Even got US$90 back for our effort! Sailed off into the evening with nothing much happening other than a brief and the evening meal - so much food. Then the discovery. The bed was too short for me. Tried to sleep but tossed and turned all night so decided to throw the mattress on the floor for the rest of the trip.

Day 2. Beautiful snow capped mountains and waterfalls. Dolphins everywhere some surfing at bow of ship. captain lets us out to the front of the ship to watch. Amazing. Head out to the ocean in the penas gulf for about 7 hrs before coming back into the channels again. The swell is about 3m and i feel it.

Day 3. Beautiful snow capped mountains. Weather not so good. Rain. Lots of rain. Pull in to Puerto eden in the middle of nowhere. Beautiful...

Day 4. Short but dramatic day. Woke up to snow and ice on the ship deck. Spectacular view of snow capped mountains either side and at 730am we passed through a narrow channel only just wide enough for the ship. The weather changed rapidly from sunny to snowing as we approached puerto natales. Even saw some porpoising humbolt penguins on the way. Tricky docking then the unloading of some cargo and here we are. Raced to the hostel to beat other passengers and will spend the day around town.

Wow. Sure is cold around here. brrrrrrrr.

Adios,

David & Vanessa
