Hola All,
We managed to figure out how to get to puerto octay. Wasn't too hard and the journey also provided us with a young mormon on a 2yr chilean mission who had learned spanish very quickily thanks to god....oh and the progress might have had something with him learning it at school. Osorno must have been the meeting point as there was a mass of them in suits and dragging around double suitcases. We thought we had a lot of luggage!
We are staying at Zapato Amarillo (yellow boot) hostel which is about 2km out of town. Great views of yet another perfect snow covered volcano from the octagonal shaped wooden dorm with a glass roof to look at the stars at night. We have the 8 bed dorm all to ourselves. Yes we are spoilt. The other buildings on the property have lawn covered rooves for insulation!
So apart from the volcano the area also has a massive lake and we wandered down to it for a closer look and a lay down on the beach watching the diving ducks and lapping water.
After a challenging morning shower we headed out to the waterfall at Los Cascades on the other side of the lake. Nice walk. We had it all to ourselves and got totally saturated when we decided to get closer than the trail by taking off our boots and wading in the freezing water towards the waterfall along the cliff lined creek. The water was pouring off the walls. We didn´t make the waterfall but it was fun. Lunch in a sunny spot to dry off then headed back to the hostel after missing a couple of busses.
Adios,
David & Vanessa
