Back to Munich for a city walking tour and one of the many outdoor beer gardens. In the 19th century prior to the advent of refrigeration, German brewers would dig cellars for lagering (Lager is German for storeroom or warehouse) to keep the beer cool during the summer months. To further protect the beer from the summer heat Chestnut Trees were planted above the cellars which have spreading dense canopies but shallow roots that would not intrude on the cellars. The practice of serving beer at these sites evolved into the modern beer garden.

The government is unable to demolish the building because it is too strong and they can't blow it up because it would risk damaging surrounding buildings so they turned it into a music school and built the Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism. The City of Munich also refuses to make any repairs to it or maintain the grounds.
