The Migration

Sandhill cranes, NM

Sandhill cranes, NM

We are not the only ones heading south.   We have been following the migrating sandhill cranes since Alaska.   Aldo Leopold remarked on what a strange lot we birders are.  When birders also have a passion for photography we appear to be queer ducks indeed.  At Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge we stood shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of other “pilgrims” in the pre-dawn cold wielding binoculars and the latest in digital cameras.  “Lens envy” is endemic among the group.  What must the birds think of us?
