The food in Peru, part I

Okay, we didn´t eat the exact one in the photo, but alpaca is a popular regional dish in the mountainous areas for obvious reasons: it´s what´s available. Despite the fact that the “cute factor” might make this meat unpalatable for us Westerners, I am here to say that it isn´t half bad. It has the texture of beef, but the flavor is a mild cross between beef and pork. Like most meats, how good it tastes all depends on how it´s prepared. I´ve tried a good alpaca steak, but a not-so-great alpaca carpacchio. I´m sure we´ll have many more opportunities to try a multitude of alpaca dishes while we´re here.
