Volunteering in the DR

Blame it on the rain.

Our trip was cancelled today because it has been raining practically non-stop, which means landslides and dangerous roads, if not washed away. Oh well. I was looking forward to seeing something different, but I won't have to wait for long. We leave for CBT (community based training) on Thursday for the next five weeks, to a rural community outside of Moca. Our families may have pigs or chickens. Yay! It will be interesting to see how they will react when I tell them I don't eat meat. Or maybe I will just have bite the bullet and eat it. Scary thought. And I have to show them my tattoos and get the customary stares from neighbors and snickers behind my back until they get to know me.

The thunderstorms are different from what I am used to in GDL. Here the thunder sounds so angry, and it feels like the ground shakes at times. Especially at home. But, I can't complain because my home has not flooded like some of the other volunteers. I don't have to wake up at 2 in the mmorning to shovel water or mud out of my room or house. I am very lucky to live on a small hill and have paved roads. I don't know how I am going to get home today, maybe just walk home in the rain with all my stuff that I was supposed to take on my little trip. Its about a mile and a half, but its nice to wander the streets - as long as its not hot! I have learned to never leave the house without an umbrella, it may be sunny when leaving the house, but rainy on my way back. It changes so easily.
