    The ruins of the mine industry are being absorbed by nature. Its people hope that there would be a revival by an increase in tourism while the mine company decides to re activate the extraction of minerals. by: camilocastellanosphotos Views[213] The silo from the gypsum mine remains standing, it is like a monument to the progress the town once had. The mine company still owns the land, but its people can barely make a living from tourism as well as a company agreement that pays them to clean and protect the place. by: camilocastellanosphotos Views[295] Between life and abandonment. Walking along the streets, you cannot tell which houses are inhabited. by: camilocastellanosphotos Views[228] El Volcán was a symbol of industrial progress in Chile, until 1973 when the military coup took prisoners most of its habitants because they were left wing sympathizers, as a result, the mine stopped working. Nowadays it is abandoned, only six families live there of more than a thousand people that were before the coup. by: camilocastellanosphotos Views[290] El Volcán is a small town in the middle of the Cordillera de los Andes, 80km from Santiago, the capital of Chile. The mountains seem to protect this group of houses that in the past was a mining camp. A gypsum and a copper mine functions there since the 1800`s.
