The women of Sapa

Sapa in the mountains of far north Vietnam is home to vibrant local tribes that still speak their native tongue and follow their traditions.
When arriving in Sapa tourists get swamped by local women trying to sell their hand made crafts and materials to the tourists trekking through their villages. Many tourist see this as an inconvenience, however most don’t know what these women only started following tourists on the treks after they were banned from selling to tourists on the streets in the Sapa township, in the Government’s attempt to get rid of street trade. Following tourists in this way is far safer for these women.
I wanted to capture a quieter side to these women, a sense of community, family and the beauty that they create.
