Photos: The women of Sapa

Sapa in the mountains of far north Vietnam is home to vibrant local tribes that still speak their native tongue and follow their traditions. When arriving in Sapa tourists get swamped by local women trying to sell their hand made crafts and materials to the tourists trekking through their villages. Many tourist see this as an inconvenience, however most don’t know what these women only started following tourists on the treks after they were banned from selling to tourists on the streets in the Sapa township, in the Government’s attempt to get rid of street trade. Following tourists in this way is far safer for these women. I wanted to capture a quieter side to these women, a sense of community, family and the beauty that they create.

A 'place' I have visited

My love for image making was sparked early in life through my dad as we would explore the Victorian high country together with an old film camera in hand and a manual light meter. We would spend hours studying the smallest details in the toadstools that huddled together or the changing shades of greens as the sun hit the valley.

For the last 8 years I have been on my own journey traveling across Australia, Africa, South East Asia, Canada and Europe with my camera in hand capturing what I see and feel. It is my way of making sense of this incredible world we live in and seeing the beauty in the smallest details.

The ability for images to tell a story is such a powerful tool for understanding, change and acceptance.

Being able to assist photographer Jason Edward would be an invaluable learning opportunity, and a chance to realize a dream of telling the stories of people and places through my images. I hope to create a wider understanding of the importance of culturally diversity, tradition and the world we live in.

To be able to continue on this journey would be a dream come true, and an opportunity I would grab with both hands.
