Another fine
day dawned in Berlin – stoked! We got up early to try and make it to the East
Side Gallery before check out. Though our walk didn’t quite take us the whole
way we had an enjoyable ramble, saw HEAPS of cool graf,
the 100ft
Molecule Man sculpture (artist - Jonathan Borofsky) on the Spree River and cute
old church next to fun kid’s playground on Rudolfstrasse.
We made it
back to the hostel in time to check out – only to realise that due to daylight
saving we still had an hour left! Argh! Simon was gutted to miss that extra
hour of sleep and we could have made it to the East Side Gallery after
all...hei aha.
Our brekkie
at a cafe around the corner was lekker and Simon got to translate breakfast
orders for two large-ish groups who came in after us. Eventually he got to eat
his own breakfast!
We and all
our gear packed into the car again before heading to the Mauerpark Flea Market
which takes over the area that in former times was the Dead Zone around the Berlin
Wall. This market is HUGE.
The part of
the wall there is still actively used for graf so quite different to the East
Side Gallery but very interesting. The layers upon layers of paint covering it
and peeling off in places looks cool. Locals were out in force using the grassy
areas to full potential – kicking a ball around, Frisbee, picnicking and flying
kites to name a few activities. We ventured into the market after walking the
wall but didn’t last too long as the hordes were a bit intense and we needed to
hit the road.
Back we
wandered to the car and Simon began the drive back to Hamburg. Good weather and
not too much traffic ensured we made it home by Maren’s 5pm goal. A quiet
evening in with Indian food for dinner again – just too tasty!
