Today was another slower start – up, brekkie, made sandwiches for lunch and packed some fruit and bits then we had to pack our overnight bags before heading North. Jeanine had booked us into a B&B in Edam for tonight so we could spend all of tomorrow exploring Amsterdam...EXCITING!
A couple of hours driving (broken by a stop in the sun to eat our sandwiches for lunch) before a stop in Edam to see the B&B, get a key and drop off our bags.
Then on to Volendam - a fishing town that is a holiday destination for locals and a ‘typically Dutch’ town that Jeanine had never visited but always wanted to. The weather was beautiful (once again) and we parked near the info site before gathering a map of the area and heading toward the water. Cool boats, cute houses, loads of fish, an early Catholic church, frites on the waterfront as we watched the boats and birds (Dutch fries – they get into them in a big way with mayonnaise and many stores have a frites man figurine outside!), spotted one of Volendam’s famous sons – a Dutch musician, looked at statues and found an old beacon for boats before heading back to Edam in the early evening.
Edam is VERY picturesque – all three of us loved it! Wee canals, bridges, churches, historic buildings on a bit of a lean, the most exciting candy store any of us had been inside, a cool fort and lovely feel. We explored until it got dark then retired to the Sphinx Cafe as it was their 5Euro pizza Wednesday. Fresh and delicious pizza arrived and they were so big and filling we had enough left over for lunch the next day!
Back to our B&B where we relaxed, ate some of the treats from the candy store and looked at pictures from today. A good day!
