I work in the commercial photography industry, not as a photographer but as an assistant and producer. My job is focused around commercial advertising where everything is poked and prodded, removed and replaced, and propped up and told to smile, but from the beginning my love has always been journalism. Through art school I tried to maintain the raw approach that I admired in journalistic photography as I entered the commercial world. As the industry advanced and moved forward, the requests for “can you replace this, with this?” increased... but there’s nothing wrong with that. I actually really love the retouching and editing part of commercial photography. It’s one more chance to make it your own. It’s just time to get back to what I originally fell in love with. This scholarship will give me the chance to work toward something more real than what my job can bring me. Hopefully this mentorship will give me the tools and knowledge that I need to bridge that gap from the perceived world of commercial photography to the real world of journalistic photography.
