In its area of 8 hundred square meter, Madeira has over 100 tunnels. Together with the highways it results in a massive 140km network with a cost of 1814,6 million euros. This investment came manly from European funds, and has naturally cause many polemic discussions about the management of such funds.

This is a functional replica of Santa Maria, the main ship used by Columbus in is first voyage. Contrary to common sense, these type of ships weren't meant for exploration, they were simply second-hand merchant ships. Santa Maria was used for wine exportation, currently it is a touristic attraction representing the wine expo industry that has greatly contributed for Madeira's reputation.

An ironic situation. Madeira as a Gross domestic product per capita of 103% of the European average. It is s reported to be the second richest region of Portugal, right after the Portugese capital, and yet manages to have such poverty.
