This is a functional replica of Santa Maria, the main ship used by Columbus in is first voyage. Contrary to common sense, these type of ships weren't meant for exploration, they were simply second-hand merchant ships. Santa Maria was used for wine exportation, currently it is a touristic attraction representing the wine expo industry that has greatly contributed for Madeira's reputation.
