Living the Next Great Adventure, Now

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 5 photos

This album represents a trip that I recently took to Okinawa, Japan with my Grandmother. It was her first time back in 30 years and I had never been before. It was foreign to both of us, but also familiar and full of long-lost relatives. It was home, vibrant and with a deep history that I wanted to tap into. We visited during the Uchinanchu festival, a chance for Okinawans living abroad to return to the island every 5 years. We were embraced wholeheartedly. These pictures represent what I felt was the beauty of the historical, natural and modern heart of the island and my experiences there.

I want to be the kind of photographer who can capture that moment in time, that image, that will transport the viewer to that place and that feeling that I felt when I took the shot. I keep a critical eye out everywhere I go, trying to think like a story-boarder for a film that no one has written the script for yet.I see potential in the wondrous and the mundane and I hate the feeling of letting an opportunity flit by, ungrasped and lost. That is what a good photo represents to me, and I think that I have the drive, the eye and the ability to benefit from a mentoring experience that will teach me how to take these kinds of photographs.
