This is the famous roof-line of Shurijio, the old Ryukyu Kingdom palace. It sits proudly on the hill overlooking the capital city of Naha. The palace is full of rich colors as well as rich history. In this shot, the palace seems removed from time - just like when you visit. It remains situated among the ever-present rain-heavy clouds that define the humid weather of the small island.

This is the gauntlet stadium walk into the Naha City Stadium where the opening ceremonies for the 5th Annual Uchinanchu Festival were being held. The festival takes place every 5 years and it is an opportunity for native Okinawans to reunite with friends and family as they pour in from all corners of the planet. The Festival represented the opening of a whole new world for me, my Grandmother's Old World, and as I walked down the rich orange hallway toward the officials in their bright jackets, I was excited to find what was waiting for us in the light at the end of the tunnel.

This precocious, puffy little fish lives at the Ocean Expo in the northern part of the island of Okinawa where the tropical giants of the ocean mingle with the minuscule lifeforms of the reefs. The fish are exotic and varied, but can sometimes be found on the menus of local restaurants as well.
