This waterfall of cranes is formed by the offerings left by visitors to the Himeyuri Students War Memorial in the south of the island. Here, the brutal reality of the Battle of Okinawa is revealed and remembered. Thousands of the myriad and rainbow colored cranes cascade down the monuments in memory of fallen soldiers and civilians.

This precocious, puffy little fish lives at the Ocean Expo in the northern part of the island of Okinawa where the tropical giants of the ocean mingle with the minuscule lifeforms of the reefs. The fish are exotic and varied, but can sometimes be found on the menus of local restaurants as well.

The trees on the monsoon-ravaged island of Okinawa are made for stability. Their roots crawl out bracingly and the trunks stand almost on stilts. The roots sprawl out at your feet and the jungle history of the urbanized island sits under your shoe soles.
