Kratie

CAMBODIA | Friday, 13 January 2012 | Views [455]

I went to Kratie because it was an easy stop on my way to the border, and I wanted to see the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. Kratie wasn't much of a town, but it was low-key and I rented a bike to see the countryside and climbed another mountain to see a temple. I had to hire a boat to see the dolphins which turned out to be somewhat expensive trip ($45) but worth it as I did see them (though I couldn't get a good picture). The day was gorgeous and the driver pulled up to an island so I could go swimming if I wanted. I waded around in the warm water - the place was very peaceful and devoid of any machinery noise or development. It felt strange standing in that boat knowing that there are less than 50 of these fresh water dolphins left when once they were plentiful, playing, dancing and interacting with the people on this river.
