In Hindu weddings, fire is the main witness to the vows taken - Hence no ceremony is complete without a homkund (Fire-pit). Several Hindu sub castes - offer "Laja" (puffed rice, as a symbol of prosperity) to the fire while Mantras are being chanted by the pandit (priest). Through this food offering, the bride wishes a long life for her husband and prosperity of the family. The couple circles around the fire three times, feeding the puffed rice each time.
