Wood ducks, Lettuce Lake Park

LETTUCE LAKE IS HILLSBORO COUNTY’S most popular park with as many as 3500 visitors on a weekend day.  And with almost as many birds.  But on a weekday morning the place can feel as remote and empty as the Everglades.

    Roseate Spoonbill

The number of species changes daily.  We’ve seen a total of 45 species and our record for a morning is 41.  One day we saw eleven limpkins, a dozen black-crowned night herons on another and we can usually count on a lone roseate spoonbill.  White ibis are the most numerous with great egrets and great blue herons close behind.

The least sighted — and by far most colorful are the rare pairs of wood ducks, while the resident barred owl shows himself only when we’ve left the camera behind.
